Our multidisciplinary design organization is seeking an Ancestry Writer to own and elevate copy for our expanding ancestry features across product channels. At 23andMe, copy plays a pivotal role in how people think about genetics, ancestry, health, and lifestyle. Considering every detail, as a member of the Design team you will help facilitate the creation of intuitive experiences that empower individuals to gain insight into their ancestry and revolutionize how people understand their personal histories.

What You’ll Do

  • The Ancestry Writer will research and write about human populations with an understanding of nuances and sensitivities in creating global consumer-focused, genetically personalized content for millions of 23andMe customers. 
  • Generate cultural insights and population-specific content about ancestral migrations and current communities to help our customers understand their genetic connections to people and places worldwide.
  • Partner with product designers, population genetics experts, and product teams to deliver high-quality, innovative work with global and culturally relevant sensibilities across a wide variety of audiences.
  • Strengthen the brand voice and tone across all customer-facing ancestry touchpoints.
  • Concept, write, and edit short-form and long-form ancestry content across a variety of mediums including in-product/digital, video, social, email, experiential, and more.
  • Establish relationships and gather input from external key opinion leaders, community groups, and internal employee resource groups, to incorporate a DEI lens to the work and process.


What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of work experience focusing on writing detailed, thought-provoking, and informative content.
  • A strong portfolio that showcases compelling, clear, inspiring, and provocative writing.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with product teams to deliver best in class creative experiences and campaigns.
  • The ability to turn business goals and creative vision into world-class executions.
  • Strategic thinking with proficiency communicating complex topics to lay audiences. 
  • An interest in applying existing knowledge of (or in learning about) genetics, ancestry, global cultures, and human migrations.
  • Aptitude in evaluating findings from scientific journal articles and contextualizing them with a deep understanding of the history of human populations around the world is a plus.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in English, History, or related to human population genetics, anthropology, sociology, or bioethics a plus.

Note: Ability to work from 23andMe's office in Sunnyvale, CA a minimum of 3 days per week

Pay Transparency
23andMe takes a market-based approach to pay, and amounts will vary depending on your geographic location. The salary range reflected here is for a candidate based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
